1545: King Henry VIII’s flagship “Mary Rose” sinks in the Solent, north of the Isle of Wight, while leading an attack on the French invaders. The remains of the ship were rediscovered in the 1970s and it was raised in what was one of the most expensive projects in maritime archaeology, in 1982.
1966: Fifty-year-old Frank Sinatra marries 21-year-old Mia Farrow.
1843: The steamship SS Great Britain is launched. Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was the first ocean-going craft with an iron hull or screw propeller. It was the largest vessel afloat in the world at the time.
1879: Doc Holliday kills for the first time after a man shoots up his saloon in New Mexico.
1922: American Johnny Weissmuller becomes the first man to break 1 minute for the 100m freestyle when he swims 58.6 sec. at Alameda in California.
1940: Adolf Hitler orders Great Britain to surrender.
1982: The Privy Council granted New Zealand citizenship to Western Samoans born since 1924, but the government did not accept this decision. In response, it rushed through an act granting New Zealand citizenship only to Western Samoans who were living in New Zealand on 14 September 1982 or who subsequently obtained permanent residence.
