Tulsi Gabbard Boards the Trump Train

The Trump-Kennedy-Gabbard coalition suggests that at least some people in or near the halls of power are realizing the situation is truly dire – so much so that partisan rancor must finally be put aside.

Robert F Kennedy Jr recently used the term “unity government” to describe a potential future Trump administration. The independent presidential candidate also indicated that Trump might possibly “make a series of announcements with other Democrats who are joining his campaign…” It appears he may have been correct. On Aug 26, former Democratic Representative Tulsi Gabbard – who left the party two years ago – also endorsed Trump’s 2024 White House bid.

Gabbard has been an outspoken critic of the Democratic Party and, since 2022, she has been rubbing shoulders with more conservatives than liberals. Speaking at a National Guard conference in Detroit on the third anniversary of a suicide bombing that killed 13 US service members in Afghanistan, Gabbard made her case for the former – and possibly next – president of the United States.

“I am proud to stand here before you today, whether you’re a Democrat, a Republican or an independent,” the former representative from Hawaii said. “If you love our country, as I do, if you cherish peace and freedom as we do, I invite you to join me in doing all that we can to save our country and elect President Donald J Trump and send him back to the White House to do the tough work of saving our country and serving the people.”

This is another blow to Kamala Harris’s campaign and to prominent congressional Democrats. They have constantly relied on the narrative that Trump is an extremist who will shred the Constitution and deprive Americans of their rights and freedoms. Yet, if that was an accurate description of the former president’s intentions, neither Kennedy nor Tulsi Gabbard would go anywhere near him.

Tulsi Gabbard Deals the Harris Campaign a Blow

Indeed, since Harris continues to avoid the media and has, to date, revealed only one policy proposal that she didn’t borrow from Trump, it seems that the vice president may be hoping to capture the Oval Office solely on fearmongering about the alleged dangers posed by the 45th president. That narrative suffered one blow when Kennedy threw his support behind Mr Trump, and another with the endorsement from Tulsi Gabbard. And this was even after left-of-center tech mogul Elon Musk threw his considerable weight behind Trump.

If any more current or former Democrats – or any prominent figures associated with the political left – announce their support for Trump’s campaign, would-be Harris voters might begin scratching their heads, wondering if Orange Man is really as bad as they have been told.

The nation has always been politically divided. One could argue that the division became especially bitter when George W Bush defeated Al Gore in a contentious and chaotic 2000 election. The bitterness turned to animus during the Obama years, and the left’s almost savage hostility towards Trump and his supporters made things even worse. Despite claims that he would be a unifying figure, under Joe Biden’s tenure the country appears more divided than ever. In fact, on several occasions, he has railed angrily against “MAGA Republicans,” seemingly determined to alienate half the population even further.

Today, it seems to many that there’s an underlying weariness – or perhaps even hopelessness – among Americans of all political stripes. There’s a feeling that people on both sides of the chasm are getting tired of the hate and the angry rhetoric. One can even almost sense that a lot of people are growing angrier at all the anger.

The idea of a “unity government,” then, would probably appeal to a surprisingly large number of voters. Kamala Harris and her allies in Congress have said nothing to indicate that she intends to heal the wounds. Indeed, despite the lip-service to unity she offered in her DNC acceptance speech, few concrete proposals towards unification have been offered. Since Joe Biden’s ouster from the 2024 race, and Harris’s ascension to the top of the ticket, a lot of people on the left have thrown the word “joy” around – but they are certainly not implying that Republicans or conservatives should also be feeling that joy.

With Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F Kennedy Jr in his corner, Donald Trump is looking more and more like he is trying to bring his own brand of joy to the mass consciousness of America. An alliance, a detente, a partnership – call it what you will. The Trump-Kennedy-Gabbard coalition suggests that at least some people in or near the halls of power are realizing the situation is truly dire – so much so that partisan rancor must finally be put aside.
