Yesterday’s view was of a train ride from Lima to Huancayo in Peru on the Andean Central Railroad. ( A train ride for train lovers )
It traverses 58 bridges and 69 tunnels and reaches a maximum altitude of nearly 16,000 ft. It’s the highest altitude railway in the Western Hemisphere, second only in the world to the Qinghai Tibet railway in China.
( A challenging but memorable 12-hour trip. Passengers collapsing with altitude sickness, particularly the ultra-fit, Lycra-clad European tourists who assumed they were bulletproof to the effects of altitude. Our group of over 60s had a Peruvian guide who insisted we keep deep breathing to cope with the altitude and we obeyed unquestioningly as people and even the train’s nurses dropped like flies. Fear is a great motivator! Our group arrived at Huancayo somewhat shattered but upright and well. Watching the young and ‘superfit’ being carried off to hospital was quite sobering.)
