What did Australia do to deserve these clowns? In a time of concatenating crises, we’ve been cursed with the weakest, most gutless federal governments imaginable. First, the Morrison government, which, when the Covid pandemic inevitably arrived on Australian shores, simply handballed virtually all policy to state premiers on petit-dictateur power-trips. Now, with anti-Semitic mobs marching and howling weekly in Australian cities, the worse-than-weak Albanese government.
Not, of course, that this curse is unique to Australia. It seems as though nearly the entire Western world has been condemned to live out Yeats’s doom-filled prophecy that the best lack all conviction, while the worst are full of passionate intensity. Except that ‘the best’ is far too generous an epithet for the clown car of what’s passed for ‘leadership’ in the West.
