“What’s he building in there? We have a right to know!”
– Tom Waits
Way back in the halcyon days of 2017, nobody thought to blink an eye or ask any questions when the Chinese communists decided to plonk a massive consulate building right in the middle of Adelaide.
SA Health has confirmed the former Drug and Alcohol Services SA centre at 90-92 Fourth St, listed for sale by Renewal SA last year, was bought by the Chinese consul-general to be used for offices and accommodation.
While on the market, the sprawling 5600sq m site was valued by one real estate agent to be in excess of $5 million.

Why Adelaide, of all places? According to its spruikers, to “build economic links”. It’s merely coincidental, no doubt, that Adelaide is the centre of major defense industries. In fact, it was in 2017 that a massive data breach saw secret defense information, including on the Joint Strike Fighter, stolen from an Adelaide defense contractor.
But, while digital theft can be conducted from practically anywhere in the world, much traditional espionage work still requires an on-site presence.
Fast-forward three years, and, anti-Beijing activist Drew Pavlou notes, the CCP is expanding its on-site presence in Adelaide in a very big way.
New construction shows the Adelaide Chinese Consulate is expanding. Local contractors say the fence alone cost $1.5 million. Why do they need such fortifications in a quiet suburb of Australia’s 5th largest city? Adelaide has a large defense industry and Australia’s largest Uyghur population. So this will be an intelligence gathering facility.
There is no reason China needs a Consulate in Australia’s fifth largest city. It is not essential to diplomacy between Australia and China. They are not even trying to hide the fact that this will be a spy outpost. What the hell is the government doing? Senator Rex Patrick is one of the few voices in Parliament standing against this.

It would be absolutely, ridiculously naive to think that the Chinese Communist Party and the Peoples’ Liberation Army won’t have an active presence in this “consulate”. Locating it in the middle of a major defense hub and near Australia’s largest community of people whom China is waging a brutal genocide against only gives the game away more.
The Australian government is taking a strong and principled stance in many areas against China’s “silent invasion” of Australia. This needs to be another.
