Who’s Really Pressuring Luxon to Fix Education?

It is getting rather obvious that the upper middle class is tired of pretending that ‘equality’ is good if it means their children are being locked out.

OPINION

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about power it’s that asking cui bono is always a good idea, especially when it comes to education.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon’s big announcement over the weekend was his decision to accelerate the incoming curriculum changes for maths to start in 2025, rather than waiting any longer. The reason? According to the Curriculum Insights and Progress Study (CIPS), just 22 per cent of year-eight students had reached the benchmark for mathematics last year.

“There’s no way to describe those results as anything other than a total system failure,” said Luxon to a crowd of National supporters, and he is correct. But it’s worth double-checking what “system” he’s talking about here.
