Most of the country is still reeling from the drastic lockdown response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The major cities are hurting, but it’s not until one travels to rural New Zealand that the simmering economic issues appear.

Chief economist Eric Crampton’s latest report called Safe Arrivals outlines how shifting the arrangements at the border towards safely scaling up the entry and exit of visitors will be crucial to reinvigorate much of New Zealand’s struggling tourist sector and help breathe new life back in to the smaller centres.
