New Zealand is on the brink of becoming the world’s next genetic engineering playground – a so-called ‘safe haven’ for biotech and gain-of-function experimentation. Since the Wuhan scandal and the collapse of Ukraine as a hub for US biolabs, global eyes have turned to our isolated islands. Why? Because any accident or release here can be more easily contained, and because New Zealand is not seen as a likely theatre of war. That should terrify every thinking person.

All our political parties, in one form or another, are signalling support for liberalising GE laws. Some say they want ‘safeguards’, others talk about ‘modernising regulations’ or ‘compromise’. A compromise on GE is not progress, it’s surrender. The risks are too great, the history too damning. To allow this kind of research and tech into NZ turns us all into lab guinea pigs. They threaten to tank our economy and trash decades of marketing NZ as a “clean and green” destination, and producer of high-value food.

Just who are they working for? Who is behind this crazy push for GE that the people of NZ soundly reject? Who's pulling the strings of our politicians? Not the people who they are supposed to serve – obviously! Why are they gas-lighting us? Why are they ignoring the evidence that GE is nothing but bad news for clean, green NZ?

Don’t be fooled by glossy PR and empty promises of ‘safe’ biotech. Look instead at what the world has already suffered – excess deaths, chronic illness, fractured societies, bankrupt economies – all tied to the reckless pursuit of biotechnology. Are we really prepared to let New Zealand become the next experiment?

Urge your friends, family, and colleagues to do the same. We must insist on a complete ban on all forms of genetic engineering and gain-of-function research.
