After flying into an out-of-control rage while arguing about a wheelie bin, Finn Higgins packed his two young kids into his SUV and hooned off – and over a road worker.
That 68-year-old worker suffered near-catastrophic injuries including numerous broken bones, a shattered pelvis, and internal bleeding. He was flown to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition.
It was the climax of a spectacular and violent rampage that began shortly before midday on January 11, when the 28-year-old Higgins – who is described as a “teacher” on police charging documents – went to Wheelie Bin Services in Mowatt St, Waharoa.

Higgins went through a red light and drove erratically. When he finally stopped he was held down by road workers until he calmed down. He later swerved at a worker and drove over him – narrowly missing a second worker in the process.
