Collapsing The Narrative

The very thought of normal people gaining access to primary sources is hateful because it means there is no place for court historians.

Look, I distrust anyone who claims to know what happened in the 20th century – the Golden Age of Lies. But the allergic reaction to Tucker Carlson’s recent interview shows that the regime is struggling to defend its lies in the internet age.

A good rule of thumb, post-1945, is that all historians who have a public profile are court historians. Their job is to construct the regime’s narrative. Court historians absolutely loathe revisionist historians. It’s not that revisionists are working with different material – anyone can read the primary sources. Rather, the problem is that history is not a science. History is a branch of literature. And as such, historians of any stripe are under no obligation to tell the truth.
