David Seymour MP
ACT Leader

The COVID-19 crisis has wreaked havoc on New Zealand’s economy.

Over 40% of workers are receiving support from the Government’s wage subsidy programme and businesses across the country are suffering from a sudden halt in revenue due to the lockdown.

MPs should show leadership and solidarity with New Zealanders by reducing their own pay.

My bill proposes cutting the salaries of every MP, from the Prime Minister down to an opposition backbencher by 20% for three months – the same length of time as the Government’s wage subsidy. Not only will that save taxpayers money, it will also provide ministers with the credibility to ask the public sector to make similar sacrifices, if appropriate.
