A catfight over a community award given to much-loved local feline will come to a head on Thursday as local body politicians get their claws out at a meeting to decide if the honour will be revoked.

Loki the Wigram community cat has long held a special place in the Christchurch suburb’s heart, with his regular appearance at the local New World winning him pats and trolley rides from shoppers.

It was this community outreach that led Andrei Moore, the Christchurch City Councillor for the Halswell ward, to nominate Loki for a Community Service Award.

The nomination was accepted. But that wasn’t the end of it.

The Waipuna Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton Community Board received a complaint that recognising Loki took away from the work of the great humans of Wigram and they will meet tonight to make a decision.

“If we made decisions purely based on a couple of complaints that we get, we’d never do anything,” Moore, who has previously dubbed Loki “the mayor of Wigram”, told Stuff.
