New Zealand writer Maurice Gee has died in Nelson, aged 93.

A much-loved, prolific and unassuming literary figure, Gee wrote more than 30 novels for both adults and children. His 1979 novel Under the Mountain was adapted into a TV series in 1981 and a film in 2009.

His works for adults include The Plumb Trilogy (1978-83), which is commonly regarded as one of the most significant achievements in New Zealand literature. An earlier novel, In My Father’s Den (1972), was adapted as a film in 2004.

In a statement, his children Nigel, Emily and Abigail Gee said, “On the afternoon of June 12, our father, Maurice Gee, died peacefully at home at the age of 93.”
