Dear Editor

I am going to be sitting by my phone most of the day expecting a call from Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, after her apology to people who were in this country illegally.

I was born left-handed and in my first years at school was strapped daily for being left-handed. Teachers were continually smacking my hand with rulers and making me write right-handed so I did all my writing exercises with my right hand.

Today I print as they never succeed in making me right-handed. I complained to my parents but teachers in those days knew best so the smacking went on for a couple of years.

I was also unfortunate enough to grow up in a Maori speaking area and we were also smacked for speaking Maori. I often think about this and how today’s children would have coped with what happened to me.

I used it as a tool to make myself stronger and it made me more determined to succeed.

I just don’t understand the Prime Minister at all. These people, right or wrong, were here illegally. I wonder what she will do about all the other people that are still here illegally? Will she grant them amnesty and give them a handout as a way of saying sorry to them for breaking the law?

Watch this space. It’s hard to fathom what this government will do.

Signed

Don T
