National Need to Shout This from the Rooftops

letter to the editor letters

Dear Editor

Liam Dann in the Herald on Sunday today said that National should not rely on the economy falling over as it could possibly recover before the election and therefore may not be an issue for voters.

I agree and believe that the most important issue is that of maintaining our democracy – i.e. one person one vote.

3 Waters is a glimpse of what’s to come under He Puapua and if this is allowed to continue our democracy will be destroyed. Therefore, National should now be shouting from the rooftops that they will always stand for true democracy and clearly state that they will repeal any legislation that may be passed during this term that is at odds with that.

They need to keep shouting it and shouting it and shouting it because their current responses are not convincing me so far.

The politicians, particularly those on the right, with the exception of ACT, need to realise that those who put them in power did so in the belief the necessary courage was there to fix this festering sore. We are now left in doubt and that is not good enough.

National could, under urgency, progress Seymour’s bill to second reading and vote it down, but this would put immense strain on the coalition, which is supposed to operate based on good faith and Cabinet consensus. An early election could be provoked, leading to National bleeding votes to ACT.
