What has been most notable about the encroachment of open borders and capital-M Multiculturalism across the Western world is how often it is done, not just without asking but very often in clear defiance of what the people actually want.
Numerous surveys have shown that large majorities of people in Western countries want immigration, especially Islamic immigration, drastically slowed or even stopped. But this is a conversation that the elite in these countries refuse to have. At best, they sneer at their fellow citizens as “racists” and go right on ahead with policies the majority oppose.
Switzerland is a little different. The Swiss famously have a “direct democracy” system that allows citizens to demand referenda, whether the elites want them or not.
Switzerland has narrowly voted in favour of banning face coverings in public, including the burka or niqab worn by Muslim women.
Recall that many European countries ban the wearing of regalia associated with extremism, such as swastikas. Why should the regalia of Islamic extremism be treated any differently?
Indeed, extremism was the explicit target of the campaign (note that the BBC can’t help but smear the party moving it as “right-wing”).
The proposal was put forward by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) which campaigned with slogans such as “Stop extremism”.
Naturally, glass-jawed Muslim activists have come out whining.
A leading Swiss Islamic group said it was “a dark day” for Muslims.
“Today’s decision opens old wounds, further expands the principle of legal inequality, and sends a clear signal of exclusion to the Muslim minority,” the Central Council of Muslims said in a statement, adding that it would challenge the decision in court[…]
The proposal in Sunday’s referendum did not mention Islam directly and was also aimed at stopping violent street protesters from wearing masks. However, the vote was widely referred to as “the burka ban”.
Contrary to “legal inequality”, the law bans all face coverings. Methinks Switzerland’s Muslims protesteth too much.
And, of course, the BBC peddles the standard red herrings.
According to research by the University of Lucerne (in German), almost no-one in Switzerland wears a burka and only around 30 women wear the niqab. About 5% of Switzerland’s population of 8.6 million people are Muslim, most originating from Turkey, Bosnia and Kosovo.
This is a common apologist argument which plays on the widespread ignorance regarding Islam among the very “progressives” who support it. Burqas and niqabs are just two brands of Islam’s shrouds for women. But all of them are rooted in the same basic, sexist ideology. Women are men’s property; “uncovered” women are fair game for sexual assault. Just so much “meat” to attract horny Islamic male cats, as an Australian imam so notoriously put it.
It also ignores the demonstrated pattern of Islamisation throughout the West. Apologists pontificate that “hardly anyone wears burqas anyway”…and ten years later, London’s suburbs are awash with masses of sentient black tents.
Most importantly, though, the Swiss are standing up for themselves, and for their right to keep their country, well, Swiss.
It is not the first time Islam has figured in a Swiss referendum. In 2009 citizens went against government advice and voted to ban the building of minarets – a proposal also put forward by the SVP which said minarets were a sign of Islamisation.
BBC
Oh, come on – minarets are as Swiss as watches and cheese.
