The general trend across the wider polling picture seems to be correcting in favour of the coalition. Luxon and his team will be hoping this upward movement holds.
National has a glaring problem here, and I have said it time and time again: they need real strategies to turn this around. At least the problem has a name, and that name is Christopher Luxon.
In the grand scheme, this poll is largely meaningless. But it does shine a light on one thing: tiny swings in support could tip the balance and unseat the current government.
This poll is a wake-up call for Luxon and his team. They need to shake off the complacency and start delivering results that connect with everyday Kiwis, especially the young women who are turning away.
If National doesn’t sort itself out, and quick, that nightmare could become reality.
National has a problem. Luxon’s leadership is failing to inspire and the party is stuck in a rut while the opposition gains ground.
The coalition’s 49 per cent is a fragile foundation and a two to three per cent swing could hand the opposition the keys to power. Labour, despite its own challenges, is within striking distance, and a stumble by National – another policy misstep or leadership wobble – could prove fatal.
Luxon is going to have to lift his game or the open mutterings will turn in to an insurrection.
