As part of our drive to keep our comment section the best in New Zealand we showcase each week an example of a top-notch comment that adds value to The BFD.

I’m changing my name to “Lucy” and I’m going to hang a shingle at the front gate, charging by the minute.

Human beings are fascinating and frustrating creatures.
I live in a tiny community and we have nicknames for the few we do know. I’m sure the last couple of elections have earned me “The Rightwing Nutter” at no. ** tag. They have watched me posting political billboards, paint my car for protests, and deliver pamphlets to their letterboxes.

I’ve attended 1 community meeting on climate change which would have been enough to cement any doubt of my nuttiness.
They all know I drove an elderly local to hospital last lockdown when her lung drain blocked and St. John’s wouldn’t respond. They all know a small group of us fed her and MADE her survive until her daughter arrived from Oz to say goodbye. They all know I sat outside her gate in a chair talking to her each day. So I’ve grown on them.

Now I have people turning up in the driveway asking about the rules. Where they can or cannot go? How long is this going to last? What if Countdown runs out of food? What if my landlord says I have to be vaccinated? Will my rates rebate appointment be cancelled? How will I get my medication?

This really concerns me. Most people that live here are old, they’re scared, they haven’t got internet skills, many don’t have cell phones.
I ordered gin for an old guy with no credit card yesterday. The “mad cat lady” wants me to feed her cats if she dies of Covid. The local hoarder wanted to know if he can still ‘hunt’ at the camping grounds?
Most interesting was the “mad cat lady” because she arrived in a mask and shouted from 10 metres away. When I said I couldn’t hear her she took off her mask and sat within 2 metres at my BBQ table!

I am NOT an angel, and I’m definitely NOT very tolerant of idiots. But I find myself quite overwhelmed by the stupidity of people to be honest.
The Government and the Media really need to ‘JUST STOP IT.’
I have become my mother and quote her constantly. “Stop worrying about things you cannot change.”

Goodness me, a truck could kill them on the road to town for toilet rolls! We will not run out of food. You may not be able to get the food you want but hey, spaghetti on toast is fine. You live at a beach, go fishing! Your landlord cannot evict you for not being vaccinated, he can’t even evict you under lockdowns. If your rates are late because of Covid, so what? They will not charge a penalty if they cancel your rebate appointment, if they do I’ll come talk to them.

Though I deliver my advice with kindness, I am stunned by the nativity. My inner Leo is extremely challenged lately, I’d like to be unkind with my normal directness.

Lockdown has delivered us a whale and her calf to watch swimming up and down our magnificent backyard, and they’re stressed about getting Covid :(
