1965, Major Edward H White II becomes the first American astronaut to walk in space when he steps outside of Gemini 4, 120 miles above the Earth. The first man to walk in space was cosmonaut Aleksei A Leonov on March 18 1965.

1937,  The Duke of Windsor, Formally King Edward VIII, marries American Wallis Warfield Simpson.
1098,  Christian Crusaders of the First Crusade seize Antinoch, Turkey.
1958,  Charles de Gaulle, becomes premier of France.
1869,  Otago University is founded.
