Today In History is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.

The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.

From the life and death of Plato through to the latest most recent history as it happens, we intend on bringing you stimulating and educational historical knowledge.

4th June 1942,  The Battle of Midway begins. The attack ended as a disaster for the Japanese losing 322 aircraft, 3500 men, and 3 of their 4 aircraft carriers. 1989,  Chinese troops storm through Tiananmen Square. After nearly 3 weeks of protests by mainly students, the government sent in the troops killing at least 300, wounding many more and arresting as many as 10,000. 1717,  The Freemasons are founded in London. 1940,  The British complete the evacuation of 300,00 troops from Dunkirk. 1943,  The Cromwell-Dunedin express derails near Hyde in Central Otago, 21 are killed and 47 injured.
