Good morning! Rise and shine!

Today in history is a place for you early risers to exercise your brains as you wait for the day to begin. Please, by all means, bring your own bits of history to the comments section and add your memories of what YOU did on this day however many years ago.

The beauty of an early morning historical post is that the date can mean the event happened today “our time” or today “other side of the world” time.

From the life and death of Plato through to the latest most recent history as it happens, we intend on bringing you stimulating and educational historical knowledge.

1987: Lotto goes on sale for the first time. Long queues across the country were trying to purchase their tickets to the $360,000 first prize. In the first year, New Zealanders spent $249 million on the new lottery.

1923:  John Herbert Dillinger joins the Navy in order to avoid charges of auto theft in Indiana. He didn’t last long. Going AWOL several times, he ended up being arrested for armed robbery and spent 10 years in prison.

1934:  John Herbert Dillinger is gunned down outside Chicago’s Biograph Theatre. This brought to an end Americas Public Enemy #1 bank robbery career. In the previous year, Dillinger and friends had robbed 11 banks of more than $500,000 (roughly $7 million in modern-day currency) as well as killing 7 police officers and 3 federal agents. He was 31.

2011: Anders, Behring Breivik, sets a bomb in Oslo that kills 8 and injures more than 209. He then goes to nearby Utoya Island where he kills 68 and injures at least 110 at a youth camp.
