As everyone rallies round to defeat the new ‘enemy’, the government is largely off the hook and free from scrutiny. It’s a situation beyond the socialists’ wildest dreams. Watch them now destroy (left-wing academics term it ‘deconstruct’) the fabric of our shared values and loyalties in pursuit of the ideals of the Marxist machinery – multiculturalism, diversity, equality, ‘social justice’.
Maori have a new virus fund – as if the virus would affect a Maori person more! The unemployed are receiving additional payments. Expect those to stay and never be rolled back.
Easter is cancelled. This is an interesting one. Few people will know that either by accident or by design the New Zealand lockdown started on the first day of the Jewish ecclesiastical calendar. Both the Passover and, subsequently, Easter are affected and will not be publicly celebrated this year. Churches will remain closed. Miss Ardern has marked this event by extending Easter trading hours to Easter Sunday – the undermining of the Christian faith being evidently one of her key objectives – and so the sanctity of that day is lost under the cover of ‘crisis management’.
For those not of a Christian persuasion let me point out that the collective culture of the Western Anglo-sphere is derived as follows. Besides the English language, which is educationally neglected and in decline anyway, we draw our beliefs from the Classical world (the knowledge of Ancient Greece and Rome), and from Christianity. We’re not too hot on upholding Classical ideals – society’s tastes tending more and more towards the post-modern – and once Christianity goes then the final obstacle is removed and society has fallen.
The removal of the Christian prayer from the opening of parliament was just a first step. This government now wants to go much further. Under arbitrary rules imposed by the lockdown the supermarkets are open but shops, including specialist outlets and butchers, are closed. Allowing food stores to open would be a sensible thing to do. But instead, under the cover of kindness, the Prime Minister – who said she will “look into” the requirements of cultural minorities, is asking supermarkets to stock Halal meat.
This, of course, will require a specially-labelled section within each outlet, no doubt one to be treated with deference, and an acceptance of the privileging of the customs and practices of some people over those of others.
As a second step, we should expect that this will eventually be deemed too difficult and that all supermarket meat will become Halal. Pork products, dare you ask, will presumably be kept out the back. It’s Christians 0 – Muslims 1 in this political match-up. And what could be wrong with that, ask the unreligious? Nothing I expect, if you don’t mind your meat being slaughtered in the name of an alien god.
[Editor’s note: All supermarket meat apart from Pig meat is already Halal slaughtered. All our slaughterhouses kill to Halal requirements these days and have done for many years now.]
Meanwhile, the Minister of Finance has announced the biggest government spending package in history. The $52 billion imprest supply bill for crisis spending is more than half what the government would spend in a year. “The entire domestic economic structure of New Zealand could need rethinking,” said Mr Robertson (Stuff), setting the Marxist economic machine in motion.
The Prime Minister has said that she will look to resolve the hike in supermarket prices caused by her government. And so she might set prices.
The language used by Robertson, incidentally, is much more akin to that of Michael Cullen or Helen Clark than something he would have penned himself.
Why would he not set wages? Cullen would have if he could. The new minimum wage hike, which unlike Easter has survived the crisis conditions, has been implemented. This effectively determines wages at the lower end of the market. Robertson says that he is also considering paying a universal basic income. To everybody. If that goes ahead then all New Zealanders will unwittingly become welfare beneficiaries and wards of the New Police State.
