The current spruiking of the TOP Party by our national news outlets is nothing new. Three months before the last election, the MSM realised that Labour was done for and a National/ACT coalition was going to romp home.
Cue 100 days of aggressively running interference for Winston Peters and New Zealand First in to split the right of centre vote. There was barely a day when he wasn’t being promoted as ‘kingmaker’ in the news (I know because I wrote an article on it at the time – BFD October 18, 2023). And, as we know, it worked: shifting the NZ First vote from less than three per cent in January polls to 6.5 per cent on election night.
Now exactly the same tactics are being pursued. The left coalition of TPM, Greens and Labour look cooked, so cue the same aggressive interference from the MSM, but this time to split gullible voters from the ACT/National/NZ First coalition. It’s now TOP being promoted as the ‘kingmaker’.
Two thoughts on this. Winston must be royally cut up about losing the title he has owned for so long. And why-oh-why do we, the voters, keep falling for this rubbish?
