Kate Anne Aynsley was likely preparing to shoot a deer and had removed the safety catch of her rifle, when she fell and it accidentally fired.
The 48-year mother-of-one was found dead by her partner during a hunting trip to the Blue Mountains Conservation Area, Beaumont Forest, Otago.
Her partner Gregory Fagg told Stuff she was an “amazing” person.
“Kate was highly respected within the hunting community and extremely professional in everything she undertook.”
