Te Tai Tokerau MP Mariameno Kapa-Kingi is arguing that John Tamihere, the Pāti Māori boss ultimately responsible for her being booted from the party, is unlawfully in the role of party president.
That claim was flatly rejected by Tamihere’s lawyer, who called it a “remarkable”, unsubstantiated, “difficult and extreme argument”.
The saga, which has now evolved into a legal dispute over the leadership and membership of Te Pāti Māori, is unquestionably remarkable. It involves two expelled MPs, accusations of financial mismanagement, bullying and torn allegiances for all involved.
