A New Zealand rock climber has been released from hospital to begin a months-long recovery after a freak accident left him hanging upside down with a severe head injury.

Will Campbell, 25, was climbing near Calico Basin in Red Rock Canyon on March 28 when his foot became entangled in his rope, flipping him upside down and slamming his head against the rock face, his friend Tomas Doell told 8 News Now in the US.

Campbell was finishing a week-long annual climbing trip with friends when the accident occurred around 2pm. Doell described the experience to 8 News Now as “traumatising for everybody involved”.

“Seeing Will in that condition was just, and currently is still heartbreaking,” Doell said.
