An Israeli man whose exploits were chronicled in the 2022 Netflix documentary The Tinder Swindler has been detained in Georgia, after Germany requested his extradition over accusations of fraud, his lawyer said.
Shimon Hayut, 34, also known as Simon Leviev, was arrested on Sunday at Batumi International Airport after several hours of questioning, according to his lawyer, Sagiv Rotenberg.
A Georgian court ruled on Tuesday that Hayut would remain in custody for three months or until a decision is made on Germany’s extradition request, the New York Times reported.
Hayut’s story gained worldwide attention after the Netflix documentary alleged that he swindled millions of dollars from women he met on Tinder by posing as the son of a diamond tycoon.
The film depicted him as dazzling his dates with private jets and luxury hotels before persuading them to open credit lines or take out loans, then vanishing.
Hayut has previously denied the allegations.
