Far-Left, Conspiracy Theorist, Alt-Left Agitator Who Purports to Be a Journalist… of the Day

David Fisher. NZ Herald Journalist. Image credit The BFD.

Wow, that headline was quite a mouthful wasn’t it? However, I am doing my very best to live up to the journalistic standards of David Fisher who yesterday published an unintentionally hilarious article using equivalent words to smear the targets of his hit piece.

Fisher reached out to The BFD for comment this week asking us why we thought that our story was true. (His implication of course was that we had published something knowing it to be false). Unfortunately for him, his digging showed him clearly that the story was 100% accurate which made his planned hit piece article that much harder.

Never fear though, Fisher is not one to let the truth get in the way of a good hit piece.

Here are some examples of his smears from the article:

  • “The email was sent from the Interpol office at police national headquarters in New Zealand to its counterpart in Canberra and sought information that could be used to stop a pair of alt-right agitators with large social media followings from going to the latest protest in Wellington.”
  • “It was obtained and published on Monday […] by Cameron Slater on his new blog which regularly pushes Covid-19 conspiracy theories and views well along the right of the political spectrum.”
  • “[…] it made sense to avoid adding to tensions with alt-right agitators being flown in from Australia.”
  • “[…] The protest saw a mock trial carried out which a disinformation expert said had ‘undertones of violent extremism’.
  • “We’ve got a lot of right-wing agitation. […] I think some manager said ‘we don’t need these foreign guys turning up and stirring up s**t’.”
  • “Slater was approached for comment, to which he said ‘f*** off‘.”

(One thing Cam has always told me is that when dealing with hostile mainstream media you either say nothing or you use a profanity so they cannot publish your reply. The fact that Fisher chose to publish the profanity is telling, as he has been told by Cam to “F*** off” many times over many years but this is the first time he has actually quoted him.)

  • “Slater has provided a platform for those opposing public health measures and championed causes shared by those far to the right of the political spectrum.”
  • “Yemini purports to be a reporter but often presents information not supported by fact-checking.”
  • “In the three days since the email emerged, it has been widely distributed on right-wing conspiracy courting websites totalling millions of followers.”
  • “[…] Andrew Bolt called the email an “amazing development” in New Zealand’s refusal to allow conspiracy theorist Avi Yemini into the country.”
  • “It has also seen conspiracy theorist Australian senator Ralph Babet issue a statement in which he accused New Zealand of being an ‘authoritarian regime’.”
