The tip line is running hot saying old National warhorses John Key, Steven Joyce and Murray McCully are having secret meetings to discuss the future of National. These meetings are hosted in private, but readers are saying they are seeing the three of them together regularly.
This can only be bad news for Luxon. McCully is as cunning as a shit-house rat, Key is wonderful with the polling numbers and Joyce is one of the few genuinely world-class political strategists NZ has ever produced.
They are seeing the numbers in the polls and the gaffes being made by Luxon that make it hard to see him improve his personal numbers even if the economy improves. They know that, just like Simon Bridges’ net favourables were a leading indicator of the National vote, Luxon will pull National down if he doesn’t sort out his performance immediately.
Placing Paula Bennett in the party president’s role will allow McCully, Key and Joyce to work behind the scenes with a loyal colleague who they know will do their bidding.
