Why isn’t Greta Thunberg, the poster child for climate change, considered a very poor model for children’s mental health? Greta should be accompanied by a warning about the mental strain that alarmist, unproven climate change theory has on young impressionable minds.
This is serious stuff. Greta Thunberg suffers anxiety, depression and obsessive-compulsive behaviour. Why on earth do we want children emulating Thunberg’s disturbed mind?
While scientists are no closer to reaching consensus on the validity of climate change, our government sails ahead teaching climate change theory to school children. Our education professionals have a case to answer for inflicting their political viewpoint through the education system.
The mental health of NZ teenagers is a serious issue because we already lead the world with higher than average teenage suicide rates. The 2018-2019 year was our worst year to date with 13.93 deaths per 100,000 people.
The Department of Education appears oblivious to the mental health of children by teaching year fours, eight and nine-year-olds, climate change garbage by people the children trust ‚ their teachers.

The Education Department is to blame for leading teachers away from a focus on learning content with the predictable drop in academic performance.
Falling from its height as the envy of the world just twenty years ago, the Ministry of Education has let New Zealand’s education system unravel by turning the focus away from teaching knowledge and on to 21st-century “competencies.”
Remember the government’s “Wellbeing Budget”? If political idealism is a shaky foundation for planning the economy you will be horrified to discover that “wellbeing” has reared its ugly head in the education system starting as early as pre-school.
Take a look at this Ministry of Education’s “Wellbeing Video” designed to indoctrinate teachers. Note that global warming is a foregone conclusion, the video simply explains how to deliver that message.
Now take a look at this pre-school teacher at Epuni kindergarten explaining how “kindness and well being” is implemented into their preschool curriculum. Extensive use of Maori interspersed with the incorrect use of English makes you wonder why teachers are not more proficient in English before embarking on a second language.
Kindness and wellbeing is much more than a concept, it underpins the indoctrination of young NZ minds. The kindy teacher in the video explains how easy indoctrination is:
“Relationships are the absolute foundation for higher teaching and learning.”
Parent teacher and child teacher relationships are built on trust which is exploited by teaching the unproven concept of climate change which is detrimental to children’s mental health.
Kerri McIvor on ZB talkback this week referred to a recent report prepared by the New Zealand Initiative about our education system. McIvor says our education system has been “hijacked by idealogues.”
“…[the education system] is a mess, riddled with unscientific ideas and seduced by child-centred orthodoxy, according to the new research.”
A study this year on mental health and climate change discusses just how difficult it is to address the resulting eco-anxiety, the disturbing state of mind generated when climate change is viewed as unavoidable. Children are told “the world will end in “X” years unless they do something about it.”
“A key factor that contributes to climate anxiety is knowing danger is coming but not having any appropriate scripts, skills, or direct agency in place to mitigate it.
So-called eco-anxiety is understood as the presence of anxiety in relation to the existential threat that the climate and ecological crises represent.”
Children cannot distinguish between idealism and fact. It is irresponsible of teachers to promote unproven climate change and ignore the resulting eco-anxiety they are not equipped to dispel. It’s a bit like giving a child a box of matches and standing aside with a water hose at the ready to douse the flames.
Depression, self harm and attempted suicide are indicators that children are not handling climate change well. The medical profession at the coalface of child mental health issues needs to speak up about scaring kids to death.
