1. Democracy Briefing: Luxon Is Saved by a Poll, Damned by the Verdicts

📊 TU–Curia: Nat 31% (+0.5), Lab 27.8% (−3.7, worst in 18 months); coalition 61–59. Preferred PM Luxon 23.2% vs Hipkins 19.8%. Leak: Luxon net favourability −19 (Hipkins −7, Peters −16); right direction 36% / wrong 54%.
📰 Fieldwork pre-MMP talkback fiasco. Coughlan (Herald PE): central question isn’t who wins — whether Luxon even contests. “No floor to Luxon’s political ineptitude.” Rotorua release = “patronising cybernetic drivel.” Closer: “adult, adult, adult” → “go, go, go.”
🔪 Hooton: out-of-touch, out-of-depth; almost no one believes he’s PM by Waitangi Day even if Nat scrapes back. Defence Force flights after fundraiser same day unemployment hit 11-year high. Willis/Bishop/Stanford/Mitchell/Brown named as better — caucus can’t pick one.
📺 Bridge: “David Brent–Tony Robbins mashup.” Garner Christchurch: zero hands up for “better off”; stand aside. (Further sections paywalled.)
🎯 Takeaway: best poll day in months; worst verdict day from his own side.

2. NZ First’s Baby Bribe

Chris Trotter

👶 Parents’ generation: 4 kids; Boomer cohort: 3 total — need 12 to replace. Peters: “eleventh hour”; ≥3 kids or ethnic NZ unrecognisable by century’s end. Up to $45k/yr for 3-kid citizen couples with a job and stable home.
🛂 Cooke: explicit anti-immigration bent — non-citizen births 28% (2025) vs 10% (2006). Left hears Great Replacement; Peters wears the odium to hoover hard-right not already Nat/ACT.
🗳️ Hardcore Right academic estimate ≪5%. Free-floating left (anti-woke, regional development, parliamentary sovereignty) was warming to NZF — Xu-Nan racial blast + 1981 Tour memories snuffed it.
🌍 Korea/Hungary cash-for-babies don’t work. Real Great Replacement wanted: neoliberalism for a land fit for children (homes, jobs, health, schools as 50s–70s priorities).
🎯 Takeaway: baby bribe + redneck week = lose the socialists of the heart you still needed. (Interest.co.nz, 3 Aug.)

3. First Among Equals

Amy Brooke

🇨🇭 Swiss model: PM as primus inter pares, one-year rotation — no Palmer/Ardern/Clark/Key dominance. Nat’s refusal to dump Luxon + cave on co-gov / race preference = voters walking.
💰 $48m Māori broadcasting; te reo “everywhere” via Potaka vs English-first policy; Luxon dodges. Māori economy ~$126b — still special funding while health/meds starved. No legal definition of Māori = open chequebook.
🏛 Equal citizenship eroded: seats, wards, Treaty in curriculum, tikanga over common law, iwi payoffs on councils; NZDF/CCC supplier forms ask Māori shareholding. Ngāi Tahu water + Gore “cultural values.”
🌍 Net Zero + $60m Golden Bay Cement for ETS damage; non-discriminating immigration while multiculturalism fails elsewhere. 100days.co.nz fightback pitch.
🎯 Takeaway: tyranny of the minority + cowardice of successive governments. Swiss vigilance or lose the country.

4. On the TOP Surge

Benjamin Dodds — Kiwi Polls

📈 TOP real beyond Roy Morgan; Quasimodo treats them unaligned → mainly boosts hung/“disputed” odds. ~59% chance of entering Parliament (lower than Herald PoP; third-party MOE baked in).
🎲 50k sims: if TOP goes Left, coalition still ~53% (because ~20k sims TOP out). TOP→Right = 83% right-bloc win. Luxon “no tax raisers” meets job-loss reality — Nat may still deal.
🧠 Personal gut: Lab/Grn/TPM supply-confidence mess if TOP kingmaker; or NAT/TOP + ACT S&C without NZF. Code to GitHub post-election (maybe).
🎯 Takeaway: until proof of side, TOP = hung-parliament fuel on the site — election heat will rewrite the numbers.

5. Democracy Briefing: The Air Force Should Not Be a Political Party Resource

Bryce Edwards — The Democracy Project

✈️ Stuff OIA: 41 Defence domestic flights this term — not emergencies. Planes belong to the state, not the party running it. No clear rules, no routine public log.
🎙️ Luxon/Hosking: finished “a meeting” 10:30pm Whanganui → King Air Auckland. Herald: golf-club liquor licence = National fundraiser dinner to 11:45pm. Office: planned overnight + Air Chathams; pivoted for Bill Birch funeral + 7:30am Auckland.
⚖️ Hipkins: bright line — campaigning/fundraising → no Air Force. HDPA: Defence for re-election = “big no-no,” but other flights “nitpicking.” Would Nat accept same excuse from Labour PM after Labour dinner?
🎯 Takeaway: party event helped create the need for the military hop. Scandal bigger than Luxon — write rules before the next flight. (Further sections paywalled.)

6. It’s Time for Tony Fauci to Tell the Truth. And to Apologize.

Alex Berenson — Unreported Truths

⚖️ Senate HSGAC 8–7 to hold Fauci in contempt for refusing lab-leak/etc. testimony — first step toward criminal path, not the end. Johnson panel has his govt iPhone; Gmail + Slack used to dodge FOIA.
📓 Diary already: fame obsession amid lockdowns; private/public splits on lab leak, danger, vax effectiveness. Phone = more celebrity/press fawning at minimum.
🔒 Prison = sideshow for an 85-year-old tried in blue DC. Need honest conversation: private ≠ public, mRNA underperformed + side effects, lockout human costs, fame priority. Full immunity offer ends Fifth-Amendment game — refusal still tells us who he is.
🎯 Takeaway: if we can’t get truth, at least name the stonewaller.

Natalia Albert — Less Certain

🛂 Peters racist/xenophobic — treated as fact. Author: Black Belt migrant (Mexico/Canada/US/NZ) + 13 years formal NZ study. Xu-Nan / Menéndez “guest” play: citizenship be damned.
📉 NZ needs migrants more than ever (boomer retirements, falling births; ~⅓ Asian by 2048) yet trusts immigration less. Left lost social licence by reclassifying scale/speed/housing/GP questions as racism — gift-wrapped the gap to Winston with bigotry reattached.
🌐 NAFTA-baby view: too much, too fast, no tax/infra/cohesion plumbing. 150+ languages; Te Tiriti polarity migrants can’t join. Cities changed faster than consent; Delhi surgeon driving Uber while we cry doctor shortage.
🎯 Takeaway: concern fair, Winston’s answer racist — hold both. Need a population strategy, not a demagogue’s permission slip.

8. Fancy Another Referendum on MMP?

Grant Duncan — Politics Happens

📻 Luxon on Woodham: “we should do it next year, I think we should, definitely.” Later: Nat policy — colleagues differ. Is anyone in control?
📜 1992/93 → MMP; 2011 keep MMP 57.8%. Support grew; under-50s never voted FPP. Third referendum likely stronger for MMP. FPP still produces hung parliaments (Cameron 2010, May 2017).
🦂 Real target: Winston. “Yahoo or numpty” at Cabinet table. Peters attacks as power grab. NZ First defunct without MMP — yet Winston did most to bring it into disrepute. Scorpion and frog.
🎯 Takeaway: forget it before more egg on face. Win more votes; don’t re-litigate 1850s colonial imports on talkback.

9. Foreign Interference Is Very Real in New Zealand

Simon O’Connor — On Point

🎤 Tasman Alliance / FSU / NZ Values symposium speech. Ex-FAT chair, IPAC co-founder: joint Five Eyes chairs letter on HK; Solomons–China weapons leak; SafeGuard Defenders secret police stations; APT40 hit on his email; named in Jimmy Lai case as “foreign agent.”
🙏 Freedom of belief as foundational right (JPII UN 1995). CCP cannot tolerate competitors — Tibet, Uyghurs, Falun Gong, house Christians; embassy pressure on Taiwan events, Ayling Herald op-ed, Portia Mao court win via FSU.
🛡 Prioritise democracy/sovereignty over trade cosiness. Pillar foreign-influence transparency draft; more Chinese speakers in intel; scrutinise Confucius Institutes; educate MPs on United Front photo-ops in election year.
🎯 Takeaway: speak for the persecuted abroad; use freedoms here. Democracy matters — money second.

10. Democracy Briefing: Constitutional Reform by Talkback

Bryce Edwards — The Democracy Project

📡 Listener text → Woodham → Luxon: “Yeah, I think I would” on MMP referendum. No release, no paper, caucus not briefed. Complaint wasn’t unrepresentative parliaments — sharing power with people he doesn’t rate. “Yahoo or numpty”; Woodham/Laws bait: “You said it.”
🤷 Willis: “PM is leader of Nat.” Brown walks off. Mitchell: “not campaigning on that” / hasn’t seen comments. Goldsmith May ’25 Orewa: “would love to get rid of” MMP every 15 years — not FPP back.
⚠️ Four-year term + less proportional system = freer executive hand. Nat ~30%; TOP rising — FPP arithmetic once gave Nat office on fewer votes (’78, ’81). Peters: power grab as old parties lose grip. Farrar: premature.
